JAMESTOWN – Historic Jamestowne is offering a new onsite activity to enhance and expand a family visit to the island this summer.
“Survivors: A Jamestown Adventure,” which runs daily from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. through Sept. 3, is a game of chance that leads participants on a search to find material and supplies to help save the colony. As they explore the island, participants look for keys to survival that will determine their fortune in the New World.

“Survivors: A Jamestown Adventure” is designed for children six years and older. Players pick up their illustrated game booklet featuring illustrations drawn by local artist Bentley Boyd at the Historic Jamestowne Visitor Center to start their adventure. Participants explore the exhibits, fort site, the island’s environment and the Nathalie P. and Alan M. Voorhees Archaearium in search of keys to survival. Through luck and chance, participants find these keys and learn whether they survived and remained in the colony.

Completion of the game earns players a special reward that can be collected at the Voorhees Archaearium.

Statistics show that most homebuyers today start their search on the internet.  Photos can make the difference whether a potential buyer decides to take a look at your home or not.  The quality of the photo is important, but what is in the photos is of equal importance.  First and foremost, your home must be clean.  A cleared space will be much more attractive in a photo, than clutter.  Clutter and messy spaces will almost always make the spaces look smaller and not nearly as functional.  Make sure beds are made, dishes are put away, trash bins are emptied, and glass and mirrors should sparkle.   Clutter may also give a buyer the impression, that there is not enough room or storage in a particular home.  Interior photos should be light and bright.  This will make the home appear cheery and inviting.  Exterior photos can be taken at different times during the day.  While a good sunny shot can make a home look beautiful, twilight pictures can deliver a very dramtaic effect.  I suggest  experimenting with what works best for your home.  Another idea that many people do not think about, is using photos of special events or simply family fun in your home.  Think about why you fell in love with your home in the first place and attempt to translate this to a buyer.  For example, if you have a great home for entertaining, use a shot of a dinner party showing guests enjoying themselves.  You could use photos of the kids playing in the backyard, or wildlife photos if that is one of the things you have enjoyed about your home.  I think these types of photos can be very effective and can leave an impression on a potential buyer.  This can make your home stand out among your competition.  If you are thinking about selling your home, make sure your agent includes great quality photos.

Busch Gardens has adopted an stray gray wolf pup found in Idaho.
After the wolf was found wandering along a road, Idaho state officials transported the 8-week-old male pup on a plane to the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport on June 20, where a team of wolf experts from Busch Gardens picked up the wolf.
Named Boise by the park’s zoological team, the pup is slowly being introduced to his new pack mates. He eventually will be part of the park’s animal ambassador team that helps teach the role wolves play in the wild. Boise will eventually be introduced to park guests once the zoological team determines he is ready.  Read More

Statistics show that it is indeed cheaper to buy a home rather than rent one.  With interest rates at historic lows, rising rental costs, and home prices at the lowest point in years, it is no doubt a great time to buy a home.  However, many factors go into determining if it is the right time for you.  There are many questions to ask yourself, such as how long do you plan to stay in a particular area?, or what are the risks and benefits?  All of your options should be explored.  Look for a Realtor in your area that can help you determine market trends, the right location, and how to best reach your long term goals.  Many people assume that purchasing a home is out of their reach, or they simply cannot affod it.  This is not always the case.  More often than not, your monthly mortgage payment is considerably lower than the monthly rent on a comparable home.  Contact a Realtor in your area today.

Best Places To Retire – Williamsburg, Virginia

An Exciting Small Town Environment With Affordable Communities for Golfers and Active Adults From www.retirementplacesreport.com

As host to one of the nation’s oldest and most historic cities, Williamsburg and surrounding southeast Virginia locales of Jamestown and Yorktown attract millions of tourists each year.  And, in recent years, a growing wave of retirees has chosen this unique region as the best place to retire.

With a significant number of resort-style master planned golf communities, together with  several neighborhoods designed exclusively for active adult retirees, there is an attractive array of housing choices available for retirees.  And the nearby waterways, quality golf courses, scenic parkways, hiking trails and bike paths… together with the many cultural and artistic events and functions… provide exciting opportunities for a wide variety of lifestyles and activities.

Although still a small town of only 12,000, Williamsburg is the hub of a much larger economic region and thus affords its residents access to commercial amenities and medical facilities normally associated with a more urban setting.  And with the presence of a superb offering of art galleries, museums and performance venues, including those of the prestigious College of William & Mary, the city boasts a proud tradition of art and culture on a par with a much larger city, yet with the convenience and intimacy found only in a small town.

Throughout the year, Williamsburg plays host to arts festivals, concerts and performers from all over the world. In Merchants Square, residents and tourists alike enjoy concerts on balmy summer evenings. The Virginia Arts Festival also comes to Williamsburg each spring, and each fall the city comes alive with An Occasion for the Arts, an annual event that has been held for the past forty years.

Kingsmill makeover will take years

JAMES CITY—Residents of Kingsmill were assured this week that ambitious plans to upgrade the resort are long-term and partially subject to county review.
Unlike last summer’s promotional rollout of a mega-million-dollar plan for rebuilding the resort and putting homes in infill sections, two briefings on Wednesday with hundreds of homeowners seemed cautious and conciliatory.
Gary Raymond of the design-consulting firm Winding Road LLC took great pains to stress that the plans extend out ten years “as a vision,” and will be “driven by market conditions” of supply and demand. That would suggests the 200-room hotel and new conference center are further down the road.
Two of three new residential sections will require rezoning and thus get a full public airing at hearings, at some unspecified date.
Earlier, KCSA president Tom Cucuel emphasized that the homeowners association “has not entered yet into any agreement about future development with Xanterra Parks & Resort,” the new owner of Kingsmill Resort. As a result, the new homes would not automatically fall under KCSA, but Raymond expressed Xanterra’s eagerness to join.
That’s important, because otherwise scores of new homes would fall outside the homeowner covenants and get a free ride for neighborhood amenities, primarily the community’s roads. Cucuel clarified that unless Xanterra agrees and the residents vote them in, the developer is exempt from the protective covenants that distinguish the planned community.
